Scripture Songs Curriculum

These Scripture CDs were originally written as part of two VBS plays and curricula developed for my church, Faith Covenant Church. We had such a wonderful response from parents using the CDs to teach Scripture that we wrote a curriculum specifically for the CDs.

The aim of the curriculum is twofold. First, I wanted to make sure that the children understood the Scripture they were learning. Because the lyrics are set directly from the NIV, there are words or phrases that may need to be explained or discussed with young children to make sure they understand them. Second, a musical concept is introduced with each song. As a music educator, I feel one of the most important steps in early music education is teaching children to hear, especially to hear the different components of music and how they are put together. The focus of the musical concepts is on listening and hearing things such as instrumentation, rhythms, sections, harmony, etc.

The curriculum is divided into 10 lessons and was written for homeschoolers, but has also been used with wonderful success in Sunday school and children's programs. It can be used in a family or larger group setting. Each lesson is designed to be between 30 and 40 minutes, but the timing would also depend on how much time is spent discussing the Scripture, and each lesson could also easily be split into sections for shorter time periods, such as the beginning of a Sunday school class.
